Difference Between LCD and LED

Ⅰ. About LCD and LED

The LED backlight is energy-saving yet expansive while the LCD backlight is cheap yet power-hungry. As regards images, the LED backlight has higher vibrance and saturation.

Since the reaction speed of a single element of an LED display is 1000 times that of an LCD display, LED display works under strong light. In addition, it also works even at minus 40.

1. What is LCD?

LCD is the abbreviated form of Liquid Crystal Display, which mainly has four types: TFT, UFB, TFD, and STN.

The laptop display is generally composed of TFT. TFT, or Thin Film Transistor, is now one of the best LCD color display devices since every pixel is driven by the integrated thin film transistors behind the pixel. By doing so, the TFT display can achieve high speed, brightness, and contrast and becomes the mainstream display device on laptops and desktops. In comparison with STN, TFT ensures better color saturation, color fidelity, contrast as well as definition despite strong sunshine. The weakness of TFN can be its high power consumption and high cost.

2. What is LED?

LED is the abbreviated form of Light Emitting Diode, which is mainly used in two ways: LED display and single LED tube such as backlight LED and infrared LED. LED display is composed of orderly arranged light emitting diodes and is characterized by low power consumption, long service life, low cost, high brightness, less failure, large viewing angle and long visual distance.

Ⅱ. Difference between LCD and LED Display

Compared with LCD, LED gains the upper hand in terms of brightness, power consumption, viewing angle and refresh rate. In this sense, thinner, brighter, and clearer display can be available with LED technology. Check for more LED and LCD display.

1. LED is more energy-saving, accounting for about one-tenth of LCD’s power consumption.

2. With higher refresh rate, LED performs better in terms of video.

3. With a viewing angle of up to 160°, LED can show all kinds of texts, numbers, color images, and animation information. It also works with color video signals such as TV, footage, VCD, and DVD.

4. Since the reaction speed of single element of LED display is 1000 times that of LCD display, LED display works under strong light. In addition, it also works even at minus 40.

Simply speaking, the differences between LCD and LED lie in the commercial digital signage displays technology. To be more specific, LCD display is composed of liquid crystals while LED display is composed of light emitting diodes.

LED backlight: energy-saving (save 30%-50% energy than CCFL), expansive, high vibrance and saturation.

CCFL backlight: consume more power than LED backlight (or much less energy than CRT), cheap.

Image difference: LED backlight has higher vibrance and saturation (CCFL and LED have different light sources).

How to distinguish: LED backlight will be stressed as LED TV, otherwise it will be CCFL LCD TV.
